Popping is a style of hip hop dance and one of the original funk styles of dance that came out of Fresno, in the 70s. Like other styles of hip hop dance, popping is often performed in a battle-trying to outperform another dancer or group of dancers in front of a crowd. This gives room for improvisation and moves that are seldom seen in shows and performances.

In the 70s, the pioneer popping group the Electric Boogaloos (earlier known as the Electronic Boogaloo Lockers) greatly contributed to the spread of popping, partly because of their appearance on the television program Soul Train. Their founder Sam Solomon (a.k.a. Boogaloo Sam) created a set of movements that evolved into the styles known today as popping and boogaloo after being inspired by one of the pioneer locking groups known as The Lockers as well as a fad dance popular in the 1960s known as the jerk.

Popping is centered around the technique of popping (or hitting), which means to quickly contract and relax muscles to create a jerking effect (a pop or hit) in the body. Popping can be concentrated to specific body parts creating variants such as arm pops, leg pops, chest pops and neck pops. They also can vary in explosiveness. Stronger pops normally involve popping both the lower and upper body simultaneously.

Normally pops, or hits, are performed at regular intervals timed to the beat of the music, causing the dance to appear very rhythmic in nature. A common technique of transitioning between poses is the dime stop, heavily utilized in robot dancing, which basically means to end a movement with an abrupt halt (thus “stopping on a dime”), after which a pop normally occurs.

Here is a list of som notable poppers:

  • Salah

  • Michael “Boogaloo Shrimp” Chambers

  • Steffan “Mr. Wiggles” Clemente

  • Steven “Skeeter Rabbit” Nichols

  • Bruno “Poppin Taco” Falcon

  • Suga Pop

  • Nam “Poppin’” Hyun Joon

  • Boogaloo” Sam Solomon

  • Timothy “Popin’ Pete” Solomon

  • George “Poppin’ G” Orwell

At this time you certainly feel like popping around and to get your popping even more stylish there is nothing better than a visit to our Streetwear Online Shop where you can find the best brands for you style…check out our sport lifestyle section, urban flavor section and street couture section.

It was to support the initiative PEACE ONE DAY, that the convergence that has already lasted 60 years between the two major german Sportbrands finally had a end. To celebrate and give emphasis to this initiative on 21 September (World Peace Day) a football match between Puma and Adidas took place.

Particularly for this memorable football game, Adidas and Puma had created a football kit in black and white that sported adidas’ three stipe logo as well as puma’s leaping cat. The kit is part of a limited collection of 80 pieces, that will be auctioned for PEACE ONE DAY.

The game was played by the employees of both companies and divided between the team “White” and the team “Black” - the final result was 7:5 victory of team”Black”, which strangely was the team of both CEO.

Here at our Streetwear Online Shop is no room for convergence and we have the best brands for sport…to prove that, you can visit our sport lifestyle section where you can find in addition to Puma and Adidas other well-known brands such as Le Coq Sportif, Analog, Dickies, MLB, NBA, Quiksilver and many more.

Locking (originally Campbellocking) is a style of funk dance and street dance, which is today also associated with hip hop. It relies on fast and distinct arm and hand movements combined with more relaxed hips and legs. The movements are generally large and exaggerated, and often very rhythmic and tightly synced with the music. Locking is quite performance oriented, often interacting with the audience by smiling or giving them a high five, and some moves are quite comical in nature.

The name is based on the concept of locking movements, which basically means freezing from a fast movement and “locking” in a certain position, holding that position for a short while and then continuing in the same speed as before. These movements create a strong contrast towards the many fast moves that are otherwise performed quite continuously, combined with mime style performance and acting towards the audience and other dancers. Locking includes quite a lot of acrobtics and physically demanding moves, such as landing on ones knees and the split. These moves often require knee protection of some sort.

A locker is a locking dancer. Lockers commonly use a distinctive dress style, such as colorful clothing with stripes and suspenders.

The beginning of Locking can be traced to one man, Don Campbell. In the late 1960s he put together several fad dances adding moves of his own (notably the “Lock“) when performing. The original lock was created by accident: Don Campbell couldn’t do a move called the ‘Robot Shuffle’ and stopped at a particular point. He wasn’t able to perform it fluently, for he couldn’t remember which step to take next. (Even the acting towards the audience was spontaneous: when people started laughing at Don because of his unfamiliar moves, he responded by pointing at them.) These halts soon became popular as Don added them into his performances. The resulting dance was called Campbellocking, which was later shortened to Locking. In the early 1970s this set off a movement of Locking dance groups, notably Campbell’s group The Lockers.

Her are just a few “Locking” moves…a lot more exist…

  • Lock

  • Double Lock

  • Alpha

  • Whichaway

  • Scooby doo

  • Stop and Go

  • The Skeeter Rabbit

  • The Seek

Breakdance (also known as breaking or b-boying) is a style of street dance, integrated in the culture of Hip-Hop created by Afro-Americans and Latinos in the 70’s in New York. Movements happen to the sound of Hip-Hop or Electro. The breakdancer, breaker, B-boy or B-girl is the name given to the person dedicated to breakdance and practicing the same. Initially, the b-boying was used as a demonstration and popular alternative for people not to enter the life of street gangs that plagued New York this decade. Currently, the b-boying is used as a means of recreation or competition in the world. This competition (Battle) can be individual or group (Crew).
There are four basic elements underlying the breaking - the toprock, downrock, power moves and finishing moves.

Toprock - refer to any sequence of movements that are performed standing. This is the initial movement and initiating of the style and serves as a warm-up for more acrobatic moves.

Downrock - (or “floorwork”) includes all footwork performed on the floor, such as the foundational 6-step. It typically involves complicated contortions of the lower body, and may be as highly variable and personalized as toprock.

Power Moves - actions that require momentum and physical power to execute. The breaker is generally supported by his upper body, while the rest of his body creates circular momentum. Notable examples are the windmill, swipe, head spin, and flare. You can see that some movements are taken from gymnastics and martial arts.

Finishing Moves - signal the end of a b-boy set. Freezes are stylish poses, and the more difficult require the breaker to suspend himself or herself off the ground using upper body strength in poses such as the pike. Alternatively, suicides can also signal the end to a routine. Breakers will make it appear that they have lost control and fall onto their backs, stomachs, etc.

Battle rap is a style of hip-hop that stems from the quest to be competitive within the culture. Although, battle rap is sometimes directed to anonymous rivals or used as a forum to sharpen one’s lyrical swords, it could be utilized in calling out detractors when made specifically for an individual.

Battle mc’s focus on boastful lines and self-glorifying rhymes about one’s proficiency or level of success, accompanied by verbal insults hurled at the other party directly or subliminally. Battle rappers often go as far as researching the dirty past of an opponent in order to dig up some self-injuring facts. These are then incorporated into the rhymes to downgrade the opposing party.

Battles can either be “freestyle” or “written” form. A freestyle battle is a contest in which two or more rappers compete or battle each other using improvised lyrics. Each competitor’s goal is to “diss” their opponent through clever lyrics. As hip-hop evolved in the early 80s MCs gained their fame through live battles with other MCs. Freestyle battles can take place anywhere: street corners, on stage at a concert, or in school.

Here are some notable Battle Rap artists:

  • Canibus

  • Nas

  • 2Pac

  • The Notorious Big

  • Jay-Z
