A night that had everything to be a joyful and magical night, but the sudden death of Michael Jackson had the expected impact…many sad emotions and a wave of tributes as never seen before.

Graffiti has a long history, the sub-cultures around the graffiti existed for several decades, and are still strongly in presence. The graffiti artists (or “writers” as they called themselves), are characterized by the passion for what they do, people included in the society, people with great skill and people aware of how they are mistakenly identified as criminals and vandals.

But if we took a deep look into the graffiti and considering that it was a kind of writing and drawing on the wall of pictures, then we would have to get back centuries, right back to pre history. We better rely on the urban graffiti that most people know … emerged in the city of New York in the late 60 and born in the train tunnels. Taki 183, who lived on 183 street in Washington Heights had a job in which he was obligated to walk across the city and during the crossing, he used a marker to write his name in everything in his path, the train stops , subway, inside and outside the coaches…known throughout the city as a mysterious figure.

The notoriety he gain with this behavior has led many others wanting to leave the shadow of ignorance … then comes the graffiti that until today has evolved with new styles, much creativity … a form of expression. The graffiti is done by people of any ethnicity. Tend to be young, but some of the 70 writers still continue to do its work. Writing is based on “skill” and not on skin color, religion, or anything that can not be expressed in a piece of graffiti. The graffiti is multicultural…

The Graffiti is considered one of the 4 elements of hip hop (with the DJing, mcing and B-Boying). Theese were the 4 major forms of creativity that emerged in the Bronx. NY, and spread into the rest of the world. The graffiti is the visual, DJing and mcing produce the sound, and B-Boying is dancing. At the beginning of hip hop, all the elements were strongly linked, graffiti artists were usually B-boys, MC’s and Dj’s. At parties, you could see a writer making his scene on a wall, while a DJ spins and scratches, the MC sends a message to the public and the B-Boys fought among themselves on the dance floor.
